    Mavis Matthew

    Dr. Mavis Matthew returned to St. Croix in 1987 to practice medicine in her hometown, Frederiksted, and has since had a distinguished career in medicine and public health. In 1992, she was appointed by the Honorable Governor Alexander A.  Farrelly as Director of Maternal and Child Health and Children With Special Health Care Needs Program and implemented numerous programs territory-wide to benefit children and families.   In 2001, she was appointed by the Honorable Governor Charles W. Turnbull as Commissioner of Health, V.I. Department of Health. In May 2015, Dr. Matthew was appointed by the St. Croix Governing Board of Directors as the Chief Medical Officer of the Governor Juan F. Luis Hospital.  As a Board Certified Pediatrician, Dr. Matthew maintains her private practice, Pediatric Consultation Services, Inc., established in 1989 and specializing in the care of newborns, children, and adolescents. She is a Fellow in the American Academy of Pediatrics and a Diplomat of the Federation of State Medical Boards of the United States, Inc.

    Dr. Matthew graduated Valedictorian from St. Joseph High School in 1976 and was awarded the Martin Marietta Scholarship.  In 1980, upon graduation, she enrolled at Temple University School of Medicine, Philadelphia, Pa.  After completing a Pediatric residency at The Children’s National Medical Center in Washington D.C., Dr. Matthew began her public service career at the Frederiksted Health Center. Motivated to impact public policy, Dr. Matthew pursued an advanced degree and graduated from John Hopkins School of Public Health and Hygiene with a Masters Degree in Public Health.   

    Dr. Matthew maintains a firm commitment to professional and community development. She is active in community affairs as a member of Our Town Frederiksted, St. Croix Landmarks Society, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and other community affiliations.  In 2008, she initiated her endowment at the Educational Advancement Foundation, Inc. of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority to benefit promote life- long learning. Dr. Matthew is an avid world traveler and served as a member of the V.I. delegation to Ghana in 2006 to commemorate the historic launch of the celebration of Ghana’s independence.
